The coming-of-age dramedy “Norman” is about values, making a mark in high school and “being remembered.” Jonathan Segal’s film is sort of a morbid guy version of “Easy A,” a tale of the lessons you learn when you foster a false impression of yourself among your peers.
Dan Byrd of TV’s “Cougar Town” is the title character, a put-upon 18 year old whose classmates either bully him or grimace at the dark, suicidal visions he articulates in Mr. Angelo’s writing class. One of those prompts the teacher (Adam Goldberg) to volunteer Norman for motivational speech duty in front of the school.
The Florida Film Festival is now well under way, and I’m just beginning to dip into as many offerings as I can. My first outing to the film fest was for the coming-of-age drama Norman.
If you’re a fan of ABC’s Cougar Town, you probably recognize actor Dan Byrd (pictured above, who plays the title character in Norman), as Courtney Cox’s son on the show. While he’s had smaller roles in several films, such as the recent Easy A, this is his first true starring role. And while he retains all of the charm he does on Cougar Town, I came away from the film with mixed feelings.
As a smart and frequently sarcastic high school nobody who has lost his mother to a car accident and is currently coping with being the sole caretaker to his cancer-stricken father (the great Richard Jenkins), Norman is in turn bullied and overlooked. The arrival of a new girl in school who strangely shows him interest seems to perk up his life, but things take a dangerous turn when he seeks attention by revealing his father’s cancer diagnosis as his own.
A frequently witty script, plus some great acting (including Adam Goldberg as one of Norman’s teachers), can’t quite overcome the fact that Norman has no real direction. His lies compound until the end of the film, but by that time, I had given up caring. If you’re interested in seeing what Byrd can do in a lead role, then it’s definitely worth checking out. Otherwise, I would suggest you place your FFF picks elsewhere.
